Ted’s East End Market- Egg Sandwich at its Best

Sorry for hold up!

Let me tell you guys about a hidden gem in Southampton where you can get the best egg sandwich around. Ted’s East End Market is on Hampton Road down the street from the Southampon Firehouse and next door to the Latin Grocery (piñatas anyone?). If you are hung over, starving, or just getting back from SoulCycle and you want to negate why you went, Ted’s is your place. Ted’s is one step nicer than a Bodega, sells very little else, and has a variety of bobble heads and old trophies upon their shelves. But it is one of the few places where you can get a delicious meal for under $5.00 in the Hamptons. Now that’s something. Warning! Be specific when ordering, because if you only ask for egg, cheese, and bacon on a roll, they will make you ONE egg. Who only wants one egg?

Pro: Cheap Eats!

Con: Tricked me with one egg

Pro: Tastiest egg sandwich

Little Red- A Great New Restaurant

On Saturday night, my brother, his friend, and I went to Little Red, the new Southampton restaurant brought to you by the people of Red Bar, the Beacon, and Fresno. I had high expectations for this meal, and I was not disappointed.

The restaurant is small, only seating for about 45 people. It does have a tented outside portion that wasnot open yet, which made it tight inside by the bar, however, once outside is open, it will hopefully feel less cramped. We got there at 8 pm on their first Saturday night open, so we knew we would have to wait for a while (they do not take reservations). They told us it would be an hour, which was expected, but to our surprise, it ended up being only about 30 minutes.

If you have ever eaten in any of the other restaurants they own, you will recognize the menu instantly. It is the same font and lay out as all the others, which I liked. It made me feel comfortable right away. My only true negative of the night is about the bread. It was awful bread, and they didn’t give us any bread plates. So I ate my bread off the table, which is kind of gross when I think about it. This could have been an oversight, or they need to purchase bread plates.

Our waiter was nice and he had true recommendations from the menu. He recommended the “mini Milanese,” which is veal Milanese as an appetizer. For any girl or light eater, this would be big enough for a whole meal. Thankfully, my brother has a bottomless stomach. The calamari salad was delicious, the calamari were very crispy and it was light on the dressing. The tuna tartar was refreshing and a decent size portion.

For our mains we had the burger, skirt steak, and fish and chips. Each of us truly enjoyed our meals and the shoestring french-fries were perfect. The dessert was not as strong. We ordered the flourless chocolate cake; it was overly thin and not impressive.

I have not had such great luck with trying new restaurants this summer, but I am happy to say that Little Red broke that streak. I highly recommend Little Red and envision going there a lot this summer.

Pro: Well rounded menu, nice staff, great food

Con: They need to order bread plates

Pro: It is all reasonably priced as well

Hampton Coffee- Great Breakfast in Water Mill

Due to the rainy weather on Saturday, brunch was the perfect activity. One of my go to places in Water Mill is Hampton Coffee. Going to Hampton Coffee is never quick, and I knew going with nine people that we were in for the long haul. When we first got there, the hostess, Samantha, told us it was going to be about a half hour for a big table, but about five minutes later we were seated. It turns out that a group of four was at the big table and they offered to switch to a smaller table so that we can sit down. Thanks!

The hazelnut coffee at Hampton Coffee is perfect. It is brewed hazelnut, not syrup, so it does not taste artificial at all. They also frothed the milk so it was warm, a small detail that always makes me happy. We got three muffins for the table, chocolate, banana nut, and lemon poppy. They were all delicious and moist. Most of the girls got omelets (shocker) and the boys got French toast. My one negative about Hampton Coffee is that the omelets are notoriously small. They are tasty, but tiny.

Our waiter was extremely nice and dealt with all of the ingredients and changes we made. He patiently answered all our questions and requests. The meal was even faster than we had anticipated! Hampton Coffee is a reliable place for breakfast/brunch in the Hamptons and will plan on returning often, just maybe not when I’m in a rush.

Pro: Extremely nice staff

Con: Slow service and small omelets

Pro: Food and coffee are worth the wait

An Alternate Eating Experience- Beach and La Parmigiana

This weekend I had nine friends from high school out for the weekend. Having this big of a group is not always easy for dining in the Hamptons. I figured we would go to a restaurant one night, and then one night something different. One of my favorite things to do with a big group of people is to eat dinner on the beach. We like going to Flying Point Beach, because you can drive your car on the sand, build a bonfire, and eat there. This is an activity I have saved for a weekend that not only am I with a big group, but a big group that includes guys. Lets face it, I, nor any of my girlfriends, can build a fire.

In my original plan we were  doing this on Saturday night and going to the Village Cheese Shop to get food for dinner. However, due to the rain we switched the night and we had alate start so we decided on pizza from La Parmigiana, one of my favorite places to eat in Southampton.

In order to make this night happen, we went to Waldbaum’s and bought firewood, lighter fluid, graham crackers, chocolate (dark and milk), marshmallows, and tons of chips and salsa. We picked up three pizzas: plain, chicken and veggie. The first two were incredible, however the veggie was over loaded with veggies and when you would pick up a slice it would cave in. It was too heavy and slightly disappointing.

Driving onto the beach was a bit intimidating. A fear of getting stuck in the sand was on my mind throughout the night, and almost became a reality when leaving (make sure to stay on the tracks in the sand!). I googled how to build a campfire because the last time I had anything to do with a campfire I was 11 in sleep away camp. It was an extremely windy night, so we (the boys) dug a deep hole to start the fire. With beach chairs and towels to keep us warm, we sat around the fire all night, eating pizza, making s’mores and telling stories from our past. I highly recommend this as an alternate activity for big groups of people, however, I suggest getting there earlier than we did and maybe picking a warmer night if possible. Make sure to wear plenty of layers and be prepared to wash it all ASAP because the smell of smoke lingers on your clothes way after you leave the beach.

Pro: Great way to spend a night doing something different

Con: It got really cold at night and my car almost got stuck in the sand

Pro: No reservation necessary

Savanna’s- What Dinner Should Be

Savanna’s has gone through a lot in the past few years, changing owners a few times, losing a liquor license, but now I think they got it right. The biggest decision you have to make when you get to Savanna’s is whether to sit inside or outside. The people in my house are split about this, but I like to be inside, especially in June when it gets cold at night.

We sat down right away and the crowd at Savanna’s was a great mix of people, including groups in their 20’s, families, and older couples. The owner, Tony, looked sharp in his thick black framed glasses and was greeting almost every table that walked in. The waitress was nice and was newly transplanted from their city location, T-Bar. She seemed to genuinely like her job, which always makes for a more enjoyable dining experience. There were three different types of bread at the table, one of my favorite things, especially because they had olive bread! The girls and I ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio, and a shrimp cocktail and Caesar salad to start. The salad was a little heavy on the dressing, but overall, still very good.

For main courses, I ordered the tuna, and my friends had the swordfish and pasta. The tuna rivaled the tuna at The Beacon. It was excellent; thick slices with the perfect combination of wasabi sauce on one side of the plate and soy sauce on the other side, rare in the middle, and seared on the outside. One of my friends asked to switch sauces on the pasta and they did it without a problem. Everyone thought their food was really good and no one had complaints (seriously!).

My sister-in-law walked in with 10 other girls and came over to say hi and we might have gotten a little excited and we may have been Shh’d by the table next to us. Woops. The one problem with Savanna’s is that they have low ceilings and the acoustics aren’t the best, so things seem very noisy at times.

For dessert, we had the chocolate mousse and the strawberry short cake. They were both amazing. The mousse was light and airy, while the short cake was filled with fresh strawberries, ice cream, and cake. They were delicious and I had to force myself to stop eating. This was the best meal of the summer so far, and I will definitely be returning.

Pro: Honored our reservation and did not have to wait at all

Con: Honestly having trouble coming up with one

Pro: Excellent meal from start to finish

Schmidts Market- Expensive but Excellent

After the Avanti Fail, it was time to try a different market. Schmidts has been around for ages and I knew I would find what I needed there. The big problem with Schmidts is that it is ridiculously priced. Actually, this is not even something you necessarily find out right away because very few things have their prices marked. At the deli counter, none of the prepared foods has the cost per pound listed. You have no idea if they are making up the prices on the spot. I guess the honor system is in place. The produce here is always ripe, the prepared foods are really flavorful, and the fresh mozzarella we got literally melted in our mouth. When you go to the register you might as well be filing your taxes. I have never seen anyone enter numbers in a calculator so quickly. Nothing is even scanned or listed, so they too might be making numbers up in their head. But the market is fully stocked, has fresh produce, and it is around the corner. Schmidts will now fill my Citarella void.

Pro: Great fruits and vegetables

Con: How much did that just cost? $9.99/lb for tuna??

Pro: That tuna is pretty tasty.

Suki Zuki- A Staple

Sunday night, after all of the mishaps from the weekend (and a late shopping trip in Southampton), we decided to stick to what we know and go to Suki Zuki. Two things I love here: The Chicken Teriyaki Salad (less teriyaki and more awesomeness) and the spicy tuna sandwich. Anyone who tells you differently would be lying. This is what the three of us got, along with a few other rolls and a beef skewer. Suki Zuki never disappoints, although after all these years they still can never fill your water when it is empty or actually give you the amount of time until your table is ready. But all is forgiven once the spicy tuna sandwich appears. Of course, the hostess had to be kind of nuts and the second we got the check she tried to take it from us and when I told her we had not even opened it, she yelled at us that she needed the table. If she was stressed out on Memorial Day weekend, she’s got a lot coming her way. However, I love Suki, and have a feeling there will be many more meals eaten here this summer.

Pro: Consistently awesome

Con: The rolls seemed to get a little skimpier than I remembered and leave you wanting more

Pro: Did I mention I love the spicy tuna sandwich?
