Ted’s East End Market- Egg Sandwich at its Best

Sorry for hold up!

Let me tell you guys about a hidden gem in Southampton where you can get the best egg sandwich around. Ted’s East End Market is on Hampton Road down the street from the Southampon Firehouse and next door to the Latin Grocery (piñatas anyone?). If you are hung over, starving, or just getting back from SoulCycle and you want to negate why you went, Ted’s is your place. Ted’s is one step nicer than a Bodega, sells very little else, and has a variety of bobble heads and old trophies upon their shelves. But it is one of the few places where you can get a delicious meal for under $5.00 in the Hamptons. Now that’s something. Warning! Be specific when ordering, because if you only ask for egg, cheese, and bacon on a roll, they will make you ONE egg. Who only wants one egg?

Pro: Cheap Eats!

Con: Tricked me with one egg

Pro: Tastiest egg sandwich

Nobu- Pretty Much What You Expect

Nobu is a great restaurant and there is no denying this. The fish is fresh, the people watching is great, and the décor is very ocean chic. However, nothing about the meal surprised me.

Driving up to Nobu, I was unsure what to expect of the space since the last time I was there it was Pink Elephant (and that memory is slightly hazy). The décor in Nobu is all white with birch wood tables and a large bar area. It feels very beachy and clean. The bartenders are in blue and white striped t-shirts that are more cheesy than they are nautical, but the sentiment is there. There are booths along the edge of the restaurant and tables in the middle, as well as outdoor seating, which is where I ate.

The menu was slightly smaller than that in the city, but it still had most of their signature dishes like the miso black cod and the rock shrimp tempura. They had great additions to the menu the night I was there including a dish that served fried cubes of rice with a bowl of spicy tuna and you scooped the tuna onto the rice. It was a deconstructed version of the crispy rice from Koi. The sushi is actually reasonably priced, but the main dishes and the drinks are where you will spend your money. The fluke sashimi was incredible and the toro scallion roll was very fresh. The meal tends to drag on because they serve everything as its own course; the appetizers, then the fish, then the sushi, with a lot of time in between. But the truth is, I prefer this to being rushed.

Nobu is a great addition to the Hamptons dining scene. It is expensive, but the food is delicious. You won’t walk out of Nobu being blown away by the meal if you have ever eaten at Nobu before, but you will enjoy yourself. I recommend checking out the pool at the Capri after; it looks like a funky place to stay (and you can have Nobu room service).

Pro: Great food and location

Con: Nothing new added to the menu

Pro: You get what you came for

The Fudge Company Vs Carvel- First Up: Fudge Company

With the recent opening of Carvel on Jobs Lane in Southampton, I thought it was a good time to review The Fudge Company, preparing myself for a battle of the ice cream locations. The Fudge Company has long been a favorite of mine, back when they had two locations in Southampton. I can’t help but wonder if the addition of Carvel in town will ease the crowds at The Fudge Company? My guess is no. Reason: the amount candy, chocolate covered pretzels, fudge, and Columbo frozen yogurt will keep the customers coming.

Walking into The Fudge Company, you’re never sure who to order from, where to pay, or if someone is on line in front of you. The price of a small frozen yogurt with a topping is over $6.00, which seems very high, but when in Rome, right? There is something about the mom and pop Fudge Company that is more appealing to me than Carvel, and I plan on staying loyal, unless of course, Carvel introduces fat free soft serve…

Pro: The amount of flavors of ice cream and soft serve

Con: The lines

Pro: The candy selection reminds me of visiting day at sleep-away camp

Little Red- A Great New Restaurant

On Saturday night, my brother, his friend, and I went to Little Red, the new Southampton restaurant brought to you by the people of Red Bar, the Beacon, and Fresno. I had high expectations for this meal, and I was not disappointed.

The restaurant is small, only seating for about 45 people. It does have a tented outside portion that wasnot open yet, which made it tight inside by the bar, however, once outside is open, it will hopefully feel less cramped. We got there at 8 pm on their first Saturday night open, so we knew we would have to wait for a while (they do not take reservations). They told us it would be an hour, which was expected, but to our surprise, it ended up being only about 30 minutes.

If you have ever eaten in any of the other restaurants they own, you will recognize the menu instantly. It is the same font and lay out as all the others, which I liked. It made me feel comfortable right away. My only true negative of the night is about the bread. It was awful bread, and they didn’t give us any bread plates. So I ate my bread off the table, which is kind of gross when I think about it. This could have been an oversight, or they need to purchase bread plates.

Our waiter was nice and he had true recommendations from the menu. He recommended the “mini Milanese,” which is veal Milanese as an appetizer. For any girl or light eater, this would be big enough for a whole meal. Thankfully, my brother has a bottomless stomach. The calamari salad was delicious, the calamari were very crispy and it was light on the dressing. The tuna tartar was refreshing and a decent size portion.

For our mains we had the burger, skirt steak, and fish and chips. Each of us truly enjoyed our meals and the shoestring french-fries were perfect. The dessert was not as strong. We ordered the flourless chocolate cake; it was overly thin and not impressive.

I have not had such great luck with trying new restaurants this summer, but I am happy to say that Little Red broke that streak. I highly recommend Little Red and envision going there a lot this summer.

Pro: Well rounded menu, nice staff, great food

Con: They need to order bread plates

Pro: It is all reasonably priced as well
